Abstract
Volvulus of the sigmoid colon is rare in most countries except eastern European countries. There is no significant improvement of mortality of the volvulus of the sigmoid colon, and it has remained constant at more than twice the mortality, of mechanical intestinal obstruction. Recently, 3 cases of the volvulus of the sigmoid colon were experienced in Seoul National University Hospital, primary resection and anastomosis of the sigmoid colo in two and simple operative detorsion in one. Case 1, 46 yrs old male was a subacute- progressive type. Case 2, 61 yrs old female was an acute fulminating type associated with gangrenous changes of the sigmoid colon and strangulation of the ileum due to unusual internal herniation of the ileum through the abnormal opening -made by the sigmoid colon and the ileum. Case 3, 58 yrs old female, was an acute fulminating type. Each of them were discharged at postoperative 11th, 16th and 24th day without specific complications.

Three cases of sigmoid volulus were presented, and literatures were reviewed.
